Simon beats Monfils in all-French Marseille final

Marseille, France ( - Gilles Simon outlasted Gael Monfils in an all-French final Sunday at the Open 13 tennis event.

The fifth-seeded Simon beat Monfils 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) to capture his first ATP World Tour title since 2013 in Metz. It was the fifth all-French final in Open 13 history.

Simon, who also won this title in 2007, improved to 12-5 in finals. The seventh-seeded Monfils fell to 5-17 in finals.

"It was a great week, but a tough one physically," said Simon. "I left a lot of energy against [Borna] Coric (in the second round) and then it was hard to recover from this one. I'm happy I won here since I won my first tournament in Marseille. I hope it won't be the last one."

The 30-year-old Simon, who improved to 5-1 against Monfils, took home $117,000 with the victory.
