The Kansas City Royals on Monday extended catcher Salvador Perez through at least 2016, with club options that could keep him with the club through 2019.

Perez, 21, broke into the major leagues last year after signing with the Royals as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He batted .331 with three home runs and 21 runs batted in over 39 games in 2011.

Behind the plate, the Valencia, Venezuela native caught seven of the 33 baserunners attempting to steal on him.
