The Royal and Ancient Golf Club has announced its first seven female members, including Swedish great Annika Sorenstam and Britain's Princess Anne.

The club voted in September to end 260 years of male-only exclusivity by voting in favor of inviting women to join.

Seven women were announced as honorary members on Tuesday in what R&A captain George Macgregor calls "an historic day for the club."

Sorenstam is a 10-time major champion. Princess Anne competed in equestrian for Britain at the 1976 Olympics and is an IOC member.

The other honorary members are British golfers Laura Davies and Belle Robertson, Americans Renee Powell and Louise Suggs and Frenchwoman Lally Segard.
