Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz plans to retire after the 2016 season, FOX Sports Insider Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday.

Ortiz, who will turn 40 on Wednesday, has played 19 seasons in the majors --€“ the past 13 with the Red Sox.

This past season, Ortiz clubbed his 500th career homer. Known for his clutch performances during the regular season and postseason, Big Papi is a career .284 hitter with 1,641 RBI.

Ortiz was a member of the 2004, 2007 and 2013 Red Sox World Series champions, winning World Series MVP honors in 2013. The nine-time All-Star has finished in the top five of the AL MVP voting five times. In September, Rosenthal detailed Ortiz's Hall of Fame chances.
