The Royals reportedly have filled the hole in their starting rotation left by the passing of Yordano Ventura, agreeing to a two-year contract with right-hander Jason Hammel.
The signing was reported by several outlets Sunday night, including FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
Hammel, 34, has been pitching in the majors since 2006, when he made his big-league debut with Tampa Bay. He also has pitched for the Rockies, Royals, A's and Cubs, with whom he won a World Series championship last season. Hammel was 15-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 30 starts in 2016.
Danny Duffy, Ian Kennedy and Jason Vargas are locks for the rotation, and newcomers Hammel and Nathan Karns are likely to round it out, although internal options such as Matt Strahm, Kyle Zimmer and Mike Minor are possibilities.
