GENEVA – World Cup-bound Algeria and Romania were taken off the field 43 minutes into their friendly on Wednesday after fans threw flares and bottles onto the field.
Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic broadcast an appeal for peace to its fans at the request of referee Nikolaj Haeni of Switzerland.
The players took a 15-minute break and returned with the score 1-1 to play the final two minutes of the first half.
They then immediately changed ends and began the second half.
Algerian fans lit about 15 firework flares around the Stade de Geneve when Nabil Bentaleb scored in the 21st minute.
When a warning was broadcast over the public address, a flare landed on the pitch.
Plastic bottles were also thrown from the stands during play.
