Rays target sweep of Jays at Rogers Centre

The Tampa Bay Rays try to complete their first-ever four- game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays this evening when the teams wrap up their set from Rogers Centre.

Tampa got a terrific effort from David Price on Sunday, as the left-hander struck out a career-high 14 batters in seven scoreless innings and his teammates hit three early home runs in a 12-0 rout.

Desmond Jennings went 4-for-5, hit two homers -- his first career multi-home run game -- while Sean Rodriguez had a two-run shot for the Rays, who have won four of five and have moved within 6 1/2 games of the American League wild card-leading Yankees.

Price (12-11) made the offensive output count by shutting down the Blue Jays. He gave up three hits, walked two, allowed one runner to reach second base and continued his recent stretch of dominance.

"I felt pretty good. Me and (catcher John) Jaso were on the same page the whole game," Price said.

In his last four starts, the left-hander had given up three runs, 18 hits and nine walks in 31 innings.

Jays starter Brandon Morrow (9-9), on the other hand, allowed all three homers and five runs in the first two innings to put his team in a hole. He rebounded to pitch 5 1/3 innings, but took the loss as Toronto dropped its fourth consecutive game.

Hoping for a similar effort tonight, the Rays will rely on righty Wade Davis, who is 8-7 with a 4.28 ERA. Davis went nine innings on Wednesday against Detroit, but did not get a decision, despite giving up two runs and four hits. The Rays pulled out an extra inning win in that one and have prevailed in Davis' last five starts. Davis, though, has just one win in that span.

Davis has faced Toronto six times and is 2-2 with a 2.93 ERA.

Toronto, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Ricky Romero, who has won his last five decisions. Romero, 12-9 on the year with a 2.78 ERA, did not get a decision on Wednesday against Kansas City, as he allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings of a 4-3 win.

Romero gave up just a solo home run in eight innings to beat the Rays the last time he faced them and is a 4-3 lifetime with a 3.31 ERA in eight starts against them.

Tampa is 10-4 against the Jays this season.
