The Carolina Panthers acquired safety Colin Jones from the San Francisco 49ers on Friday for an undisclosed draft choice.

In his rookie season in 2011, Jones totaled six tackles in 13 games. He was drafted in the sixth round out of TCU.

Also on Friday, the Panthers began making their cuts to get down to the 53-man roster limit.

Released so far were wide receivers Seyi Ajirotutu, Lamont Bryant and Jared Green, cornerbacks Darius Butler and R.J. Stanford, linebackers David Nixon Jason Williams and Kion Wilson, defensive tackles Ogemdi Nwagbuo and Nate Chandler, running backs Tauren Poole and Armond Smith, tackle Matt Reynolds, tight ends Joe Jon Finley and Nelson Rosario, safeties Jonathan Nelson and Jordan Pugh, guards Bryant Browning, Justin Wells and Zack Williams and defensive end Ryan Van Bergen.

Also, the team waived injured cornerback Darius Butler and running back Tauren Poole.

Ajirotutu appeared in 14 games for Carolina last season, but had just one catch. He caught 13 passes for 262 yards and two scores over 10 games for San Diego in 2010.

Butler appeared in 13 games for Carolina last season and had 32 tackles and seven passes defensed. Over three years in the pros, the first two with New England, he has totaled 90 tackles, three interceptions and 21 passes defensed.

Green is the son of Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Green.
