Corvallis, OR – Oregon State freshman defensive tackle Fred Thompson died early Wednesday evening.
Thompson, who was to turn 20 on Sunday, was playing basketball on campus when he collapsed. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Richmond, California native had just enrolled for the winter semester.
Oregon State said in a statement that head coach Mike Riley was off-campus recruiting and is en route to Corvallis. The school will hold a press conference Thursday.
