Fort Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Gary Browne had 16 points, Devin Williams scored 14 with eight rebounds and No. 17 West Virginia began Big 12 play with a 78-67 win over previously unbeaten TCU on Saturday.

Jaysean Paige totaled 10 points while both Jonathan Holton and Daxter Miles Jr. added nine points apiece for the Mountaineers (13-1, 1-0 Big 12), who played without Juwan Staten. West Virginia's leading scorer sat out because of an illness.

Kyan Anderson led TCU (13-1, 0-1) with 19 points, followed by Trey Zeigler with 17.

"What I told them prior to the game when news broke that Staten wasn't going to play was that this game just got a lot tougher because obviously they are talented and deep," TCU coach Trent Johnson said. "In Corpus Christi, when Kyan didn't play, our guys stepped up and that's what they did. When they hit us in the face in the second half, we lost our poise and we started to get testy with one another. We forgot about playing basketball and making plays."

The Horned Frogs, who were off to the best start in school history, failed to win a conference game last season.

TCU was up seven early in the second half, but West Virginia used an 8-0 run to move ahead. Miles hit a layup to cap the surge and give the Mountaineers their first lead at 38-37 with 17:12 remaining.

Holton completed a three-point play to make it 54-47 with 9:09 left, and then West Virginia rattled off eight straight points to go up 64-54 after TCU whittled its deficit to two.

Anderson drained a 3-pointer to pull the hosts within 66-61 with 4:15 to play, but the Mountaineers restored a double-digit cushion less than two minutes later. Paige knocked down a trey to put West Virginia up 73-63 with 2:30 remaining.

"We had a little bit better ball pressure [in the second half]. It's the cumulative effect. It wears on you," noted WVU coach Bob Huggins.

TCU led by as many as 10 points before settling for a 32-30 halftime advantage.
