The NHL's deputy commissioner says the league is looking into the possibility Chicago Blackhawks star Andrew Shaw yelled a homophobic slur from the penalty box during Tuesday's Game 4 loss to the St. Louis Blues.
The inquiry was prompted by a video that appeared to show Shaw yell a gay slur after he was whistled for a costly interference penalty in the final minutes of the 4-3 loss, which pushed the Blackhawks to the brink of elimination.
"Yes we are looking into it, and no we can't comment on it until that process is complete" the NHL's Bill Daly told the Chicago Tribune in an email on Wednesday.
As for Shaw, he was noncommittal after the game, telling reporters: "Emotions are high. I don't know what I said."
Here's a perspective from someone who covers the team (and happens to be gay):
As some of you may know, I'm a gay sportswriter -- who covers the #Blackhawks. I like Andrew Shaw and have a good relationship with him ...— Chris Hine (@ChristopherHine) April 20, 2016
It's not just a word. I'll have something coming soon explaining why that is https://t.co/F6jBkRI76b— Chris Hine (@ChristopherHine) April 20, 2016
