The Montreal Impact have signed Brazilian midfielder Felipe Campanholi Martins, as it continues to prepare for its first season in Major League Soccer.

The 21-year-old Martins joins the Impact after spending the last four seasons in the Swiss second division with FC Winterthur, FC Lugano and FC Wohlen.

"Felipe is a player who has established himself as a very good young player in Europe and we believe he is ready to challenge himself in a top league like MLS," said Impact coach Jesse Marsch.

"He is a very versatile, clever, and sharp midfielder and we are extremely pleased to add him to our team for 2012."

As per club and MLS policy, details of the contract were not disclosed.

Montreal will join MLS as an expansion team next season, giving the league 19 teams, including three in Canada. The Impact visit Vancouver Whitecaps FC on March 10 for its first-ever match in MLS.
