Mets rookie Syndergaard perfect through 6 innings vs Padres

NEW YORK (AP) Mets rookie Noah Syndergaard is pitching a perfect game through six innings against the San Diego Padres.

The hard-throwing righty had struck out seven in his 14th major league start. San Diego is the first team to face Syndergaard twice.

New York was leading 2-0 thanks to Lucas Duda's two-run homer off James Shields in the first.

The closest the Padres came to a hit was Jedd Gyorko's line drive toward the middle leading off the sixth. Syndergaard, however, got his glove up in time and deflected the ball on the ground to second baseman Daniel Murphy for a 1-4-3 putout.

The only no-hitter in Mets history was pitched by Johan Santana on June 1, 2012.

Syndergaard had thrown 81 pitches. He allowed a career-high seven runs and 10 hits in four innings of a 7-2 loss at San Diego on June 2. He also struck out 10 and walked none in that game.
