MELBOURNE, Australia – Basketball Australia said Sunday that Liz Cambage has been ruled out of the women's world championships after rupturing an Achilles tendon.
Cambage sustained the injury in the second quarter of the team's exhibition game against the United States in Paris on Friday, a game the Australians lost 72-66. Cambage scored nine points and had nine rebounds before leaving injured.
The 23-year-old Cambage underwent scans Saturday, when the extent of the injury was revealed. She will return to Australia for treatment.
Cambage is under contract to the WNBA's Tulsa Shock, although she bypassed the 2014 season to prepare with Australia for the world championships, which start next weekend in Turkey.
Australia is already without Lauren Jackson, the former Seattle Storm forward who is recovering from knee and hip surgeries.
