Cleveland, OH – The Cleveland Indians have placed designated hitter Travis Hafner on the 15-day disabled list because of a right knee injury that will require surgery.
Hafner, who last played on May 23, was initially diagnosed with inflammation in the knee. He will undergo a procedure on Thursday to have damaged meniscus repaired and will be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks.
In his 11th big league season and 10th with the Tribe, the veteran is hitting just .242 in 39 games with six home runs and 23 runs batted in.
Cleveland has recalled pitcher Scott Barnes from Triple-A Columbus to fill the vacant roster spot. Barnes is 0-2 with a 3.81 earned run average in 11 games, including three starts, for Columbus this season.
The 24-year-old right-hander, acquired from the Giants in 2009 for Ryan Garko, was moved to the bullpen in May and has pitched to an ERA of 2.19 in eight relief appearances.
