The Spaniard fought back to best Russian qualifier Evgeny Donskoy 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-3 on the hardcourts at SDAT Tennis Stadium.
Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Taiwanese Yen-Hsun Lu dismissed Indian wild card and 2009 runner-up Somdev Devvarman 6-3, 6-4 and rising Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta drubbed Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez 6-1, 6-3.
Additional Day 2 wins at this Australian Open tune-up came for Swedish wild card Elias Ymer, German Peter Gojowczyk, Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis, Czech Jiri Vesely, Japan's Tatsuma Ito, and Slovenian qualifier Aljaz Bedene.
This week's top seed is Aussie Open champion and reigning Chennai titlist Stan Wawrinka, who will open his 2015 campaign against 18-year-old Croat Borna Coric on Wednesday.
The two-time Chennai champ Wawrinka beat Frenchman Edouard Roger- Vasselin in last year's finale.
