HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) Carson Earp threw for 223 yards and four touchdowns and Kade Harrington rushed for a career-high 230 yards and two scores as Lamar knocked off Sam Houston State 49-46 to open Southland Conference play for both teams on Saturday night.

Lamar (2-1, 1-0 Southland Conference) scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to lead 35-14 at the half. Sam Houston State (0-2, 0-1) charged back and closed to 49-46 when Jared Johnson scored from the 6 with 58 seconds left in the game. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Cardinals.

Sam Houston State, the pre-season pick to win the conference, outscored Lamar 32-14 in the second half. Johnson finished with 235 yards passing and two touchdowns and 107 yards rushing and two more scores. Jeremiah Briscoe also threw for 131 yards for the Bearkats.

Devonn Brown caught four passes for 101 yards for Lamar.
