SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) The Arizona Diamondbacks have exercised the 2017 option of manager Chip Hale.

Hale, Bob Melvin's former bench coach at Oakland, is entering his second season at the helm of the Diamondbacks. The team went 79-83 last season.

Diamondbacks chief baseball officer Tony La Russa and general manager Dave Stewart have repeatedly praised the job Hale did last year.

Arizona's hopes of contending this season appear to be greatly enhanced by the acquisition of Zack Greinke in the offseason.
