The Arizona Diamondbacks have selected the contracts of right-hander Yhency Brazoban and lefty Alberto Castillo and optioned Esmerling Vasquez and Bryan Shaw to Triple-A Reno in an effort to boost the middle of their bullpen.

Manager Kirk Gibson has been trying to give closer J.J. Putz and David Hernandez extra rest, but hasn't gotten the production he'd hoped for from some of the other relievers in recent weeks.

Brazoban, who spent parts of five seasons with the Dodgers, was 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA with Reno. Castillo had a 1.50 ERA with nine strikeouts in six innings over five games for the Aces.

Vasquez was 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in 31 games and Shaw had the same ERA in five games in his first stint in the majors.
