Pattaya City, Thailand (SportsNetwork.com) - Third seed Sorana Cirstea and fourth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova were among Tuesday's first-round winners at the Pattaya Open.
The Romanian Cirstea drilled Slovak Anna Schmiedlova 6-1, 6-3, while the Russian Makarova overcame Ukrainian qualifier Olga Savchuk 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 on the hardcourts at Dusit Thani Hotel.
In other action involving seeds, No. 5 Elena Vesnina of Russia held off American Vania King 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 and ageless 43-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm took out No. 6 Garbine Muguruza of Spain 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Muguruza captured her maiden WTA title in Hobart, Australia, earlier this month.
Meanwhile, former top-five Russian Vera Zvonareva handled Thai wild card Peangtarn Plipuech 6-3, 6-2 and German Julia Goerges topped Thai Luksika Kumkhum 6-4, 6-4.
Also on Day 2, Russian Alla Kudryavtseva bested Croat Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 7-5, Thai wild card Nicha Lertpitaksinchai mauled Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic 6-3, 6-3, and Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru snuck past Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4.
This week's champion will collect $43,000.
