A fourth-round selection out of Yale University by the Detroit Lions in the 1973 NFL Draft, Jauron played eight seasons at safety for the Lions and Bengals and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1974 as a punt returner.

He intercepted 26 passes in his career, returning two of them for touchdowns.

Jauron replaces Rob Ryan, who left to become the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, under new Browns coach Pat Shurmur.
