Martellus Bennett is a real throwback for the Chicago Bears. While most tight ends around the NFL are becoming overgrown wide receivers, Bennett is one of few who still takes pride in his blocking.
Recently, Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase gave Bennett some ridiculously high praise for his ability as a blocker.
"He's almost as good as a lot of left tackles and right tackles in the NFL," Gase said, per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. "He is that good of a pass protector."
It's rare to hear that type of talk about a tight end in today's NFL, but Bennett is a rare breed. His 6-foot-6, 273-pound frame isn't just a problem for the defenders who try to cover him; it also creates an issue for the players he blocks.
Bennett's well-roundedness should make him more valuable than his contemporaries at tight end.
"At some point, somebody will pay me," Bennett said, via the Tribune. "I am an all-around tight end so as long as I am doing my job, I bring a lot to the table. I am looking for new paper after every year. I'm just a businessman."
Bennett, 28, tried to get a new contract this offseason, but the Bears' new regime was reluctant to negotiate with him without seeing him on the field first. He'll likely try again next offseason, even though he's currently under contract through the 2016 season.
