Bascue wins 2nd straight USA bobsled trials race

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) Codie Bascue came into this bobsled season having never won a national team trials race.

He's now got two wins in two days.

Perhaps the biggest surprise so far of the USA Bobsled and Skeleton National Team Trials, Bascue piloted his sled to victory again Monday in the second day of trials at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

''There were a couple of moments where I was pretty nervous wondering if I can replicate what I did yesterday,'' Bascue said. ''But at the end of the day, I just got back to business and was ready to go.''

The men's bobsled trials now shift to four-man races in Park City, Utah, on Nov. 2-3.

Nick Cunningham improved from a fourth-place showing on Sunday to grab second place on Monday, finishing 0.26 seconds back of Bascue's two-run time of 1 minute, 52.41 seconds. Former world and Olympic champion Steve Holcomb was third for the second straight day, and Justin Olsen - the fourth driver in the mix for three World Cup spots - crashed in his first run on Monday.

Elana Meyers Taylor (1:55.81) teamed with Lolo Jones to win Monday's women's bobsled trials race. Meyers Taylor flip-flopped with Jamie Greubel Poser (1:56.12) on Day 2, after Greubel Poser prevailed in Sunday's opener. Kristi Koplin (1:57.34) was third.

In men's skeleton, Matt Antoine won the trials race for the second straight day and again in dominant fashion, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of second-place Nathan Crumpton and third-place Kyle Tress.

Kendall Wesenberg (1:55.01) won the women's skeleton trials race Monday, just ahead of Katie Uhlaender (1:55.04) and Savannah Graybill (1:55.12). Annie O'Shea, whose World Cup spot is already clinched based on her performance last season, was fourth.
