Alonso crashes in F1 testing, airlifted to hospital

Barcelona, Spain ( - McLaren driver Fernando Alonso was uninjured but had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital for precautionary reasons after he was involved in a crash during F1 preseason testing at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya.

Alonso's Honda-powered McLaren went off track in turn 3, causing the right- hand side of his car to strike the wall. The 33-year-old Spaniard was taken to the circuit's medical center for treatment before he was airlifted to the hospital for further observation.

McLaren said in a statement that Alonso was "conscious and spoke with the doctors." The team noted that they "will issue a further update in due course."

Alonso, a two-time F1 world champion, is driving for McLaren this season, which begins on March 15 in Melbourne, Australia, after he spent the past five years with Ferrari. He had driven for McLaren in 2007.

McLaren has switched to Honda engines for the upcoming season.
