Agent: 49ers adding running back Pierre Thomas to fill void

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) The agent for Pierre Thomas says the running back is joining the San Francisco 49ers, desperate at the position given a rash of injuries.

C. Lamont Smith posted Tuesday on Twitter that his client was coming to the Bay Area, though the team had yet to make an announcement during a wild two-day stretch of change.

The 49ers (2-6) traded tight end Vernon Davis to Denver on Monday and also are benching struggling quarterback Colin Kaepernick in favor of backup Blaine Gabbert for Sunday's game against Atlanta, a person with knowledge of the decision said late Monday. The offense has gone two straight games without a touchdown.

San Francisco signed running back Shaun Draughn on Monday to boost the position. Carlos Hyde, Reggie Bush and Mike Davis are all injured.
