Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday fired Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry McCarthy, more than a year after a Chicago officer shot and killed a black teenager.
"This is not the end of the problem, but it's the beginning to the solution of the problem," Emanuel said.
Racial tensions in Chicago rose last week, when a video was released showing Officer Jason Van Dyke shooting Laquan McDonald. Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder last week.
According to NBC, McCarthy was forced to admit that his department's press release on McDonald's death said the teenager was walking toward officers with a knife, and then lunged at the officers. The video later showed McDonald was walking away from the cops.
