Whole Foods recalls 234 pounds of curry chicken salad due to possible listeria

On Saturday, a Whole Foods Market establishment in Everett, Mass., announced a recall of approximately 234 pounds of curry chicken salad that may contain Listeria monocytogenes.

The announcement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) [http://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsis/topics/recalls-and-public-health-alerts/recall-case-archive/archive/2015/recall-131-2015-release] affects the prepackaged products that were sold in salad bars, store’s chef’s cases and sandwiches and wraps that were prepared in stores. The curry chicken salad was packaged on Oct. 16, 2015 and have a sell by date of Oct. 23, 2015. They were sold in retail locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.

The following packages are subject to recall:

• Sold by weight “Curry Chicken Salad, Our Chef’s Own” bearing UPC Code # 285551.
• Sold by weight “Curry Chicken Salad CC” bearing UPC Code # 261068.
• Sold by weight “PPK Salad Chicken Curry” bearing UPC Code # 263142
• 12 oz. “Curry Chicken Salad Wrap, Made Right Here” bearing UPC Code # 263144.
• 7 oz. “Single Curry Chicken Salad Wrap, Made Right Here” bearing UPC Code # 263126.
• 7 oz. “Curry Chicken Salad Rollup” bearing UPC Code # 265325.

According to FSIS, the problem was discovered after samples were tested by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. There have been no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the recalled products.

Foods adulterated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that mainly affects older adults, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women and their newborns.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and thrown them away or return them to the place of purchase.
