2 Trader Joe's hummus flavors recalled due to listeria risk

Bakkavor Foods USA Inc. is recalling two hummus dips sold at Trader Joe’s due to potential listeria contamination, the Charlotte, North Carolina-based company announced this week. The company supplies hummus to Trader Joe’s.

The two flavors being recalled are Trader Joe’s Mediterranean Hummus (SKU #90642) and Trader Joe’s White Bean & Basil Hummus (SKU #91107), sold in 16-ounce plastic tubs, and with “use by” date codes up through and including Dec. 15, 2016, according to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) news release.

The “use by” date codes are stamped at the bottom of the tubs, along with the plant identification code “C.” Products with the plant identification code “J” were produced in another facility and are not affected by the recall. According to the release, Trader Joe’s  Mediterranean Hummus Snack Pack with Pita Chips (SKU #97136) products are also not part of the recall and are safe to consume.

Bakkavor Foods USA advised customers who purchased the recalled product not to eat it and return it to their place of purchase for a full refund.

Listeria infection can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young, elderly or immunosuppressed people. In pregnant women, infection may cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms from within a few days to upwards of about two months after eating contaminated food, according to the Mayo Clinic. Those symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

As of Thursday, the FDA had not received any reports of illness linked to the recalled hummus.

According to the FDA release, inspectors identified the contamination risk in the recalled hummus after another product manufactured on the same equipment tested positive for the organism Listeria monocytogenes. All possibly affected products have been removed from store shelves and discarded.
