Ricky Martin has found a novel way of getting education into the headlines.

The Puerto Rican singer, whose principal work offstage is promoting education, caused a social media furor with a recent tweet on the subject.

“An education is like an erection, if you have one, people can tell,” the Puerto Rican singer tweeted in Spanish.

The tweet, which bore quotation marks and may have come from an unknown source, has nearly 7,000 retweets and more than 6,400 favorites as of Tuesday noon.

Martin has been an active defender for children’s right to education for much of his career. He established the Ricky Martin Foundation in 2004 to provide education and abolish international child trafficking.

“Education is our anchor. It allows us to strengthen the prevention and protection of this most vulnerable segment of the population,” the foundation’s website reads.

He recently inaugurated a new education center for more than 100 at-risk children and teens in his native Puerto Rico.

“Today, 120 children and teenagers get a new chance. We come here with the commitment to raise awareness about human trafficking and to eradicate it, which is the purpose of my foundation,” Martin said at the opening of the Tau Center in Loiza, east of San Juan.
