Jon Stewart addressed the shooting death of 12 at the offices of a satirical weekly publication in Paris during his show on Wednesday.
“Our hearts are with the staff of Charlie Hebdo and their families tonight,” he said. “We know very few people who go into comedy as an act of courage. Our goal tonight is not to make sense of this, because there is no sense to be made of it, our goal is to keep going.”
Conan O’Brien also opened his TBS show with a statement about the shootings at Charlie Hebdo.
“There was a terrible tragedy in France today; 12 people were killed because a satirical newspaper made jokes that some group found offensive,” he began, noting the news “really hits home for anyone who, day in and day out, mocks political, social and religious figures.”
The attack is a reminder for Americans that freedom of speech is “a right some people are inexplicably forced to die for.”
