Bruno Mars had a special guest at his concert this weekend, one that truly shows that music can heal anything.
Last year, 11-year-old Zumyah Thorpe lost her pregnant mother and two younger sisters in a car crash after a drunk driver hit them. Though she survived, Thorpe suffered severe injuries as well as brain damage.
Her pediatric neurologist Nancy Bass told WKYC that as many as 70 percent of people with her injuries don’t survive and those who do, mostly stay in a vegetative state.
During Thorpe’s recovery at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, nurses played Bruno Mars’ hit songs every night and now she is living proof that music truly heals.
“I am absolutely convinced that singing those Bruno Mars songs and being able to say ‘Bruno Mars’ is in itself a miracle,” Bass told WKYV. “I asked her who her favorite singer was and she said ‘Bruno Mars’ as quick as anyone would say any singer, and she just started singing every single word.”
During his concert in Cleveland on Saturday, Mars, 28, dedicated the concert to Thorpe and serenaded her with her favorite song “Just the Way You Are.” The singer gifted her his guitar and signature fedora.
“Zumyah tonight you gave my band and I something we’ve never felt before. you’re an inspiration to the world! #WeLoveYouZumyah,” Mars wrote in an Instagram photo of him kissing Thorpe on the cheek after the show.
