Seventy-two million votes couldn't save James Durbin on "American Idol," resulting in a victory for country singer Scotty McCreery, who along with Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart secured a golden spot as the top three contestants.

“After the nationwide vote, the person with the shot at the finale is Scotty McCreery,” announced American Idol host Ryan Seacrest.

Instantly, McCreery embraced Durbin, who said he had a feeling it would be his last day on the show as Jennifer López burst out crying.

“I was really hoping to get there but you know, I had a feeling today,” Durbin said.

“God! I did so much stuff that’s never been done on this show,” he added. “In my eyes, in my mind, I believe I did what I came here to do and that was to give metal a chance and to bring it 110 percent every week.”

The rock star couldn't hold back tears singing Paul McCartney’s 1970 song, “Maybe I’m Amazed” on the "American Idol" stage one last time.

"You guys are the best! I love all of you,” yelled Durbin as he finished singing. “Thank you so much for this!”

As for the chosen few, they will have the opportunity to visit their hometowns next week before resuming the competition on stage.

Despite the sobs, tears and Durbin’s shattered "American Idol" dream, things did get fun thanks to Spanish heartthrob Enrique Iglesias.

Iglesias turned up the volume full blast, performing his new jam "Dirty Dancer" and getting the audience jumping out of their seats and moving their feet.

In a move reminiscent of his Latin Billboard Awards performance, Iglesias emerged on stage with neon lights sporting a fitted leather jacket. He also performed his smash "Jersey Shore" hit single, "I Like It" as balloons fell from the ceiling.

"Your'e amazing, American Idol!" he screamed and then dove into the fans.
