12/21/12: The world hasn't ended! What's your favorite apocalypse movie?

So, it looks like the Mayans were wrong and the world hasn’t come to an end. Despite the speculation over the Mayan calendar, which ends on December 21, 2012, the seas haven’t boiled, the volcanos haven’t all erupted and the Earth’s core is spinning as normal.

Now that we’re safe, what better way to celebrate our continuing survival than with one of our favorite movies about the end of the world? Of course, the obvious choice would be Roland Emmerich’s “2012,” but what about his alien invasion epic “Independence Day"? Or perhaps Mimi Leder's “Deep Impact,” a 1998 movie about a comet hitting Earth that’s much better than Michael Bay’s “Armageddon" from the same year?

Then there’s “The Road,” a gritty, bleak movie about life after the apocalypse. Perhaps if bleak isn’t your bag, what about the zombie apocalypse in “Dawn of the Dead"? Also on the lighter side is Stanley Kubrick’s hilarious classic “Dr. Strangelove,” a cheerful 1964 comedy about nuclear war.

Then again, you could always try to stop the apocalypse, like Arnie in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” or hapless stoners Jay and Silent Bob trying to keep Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s fallen angels from reentering heaven in the hilarious “Dogma.”
