Style + Beauty - Page 356
In the beginning of Anne Hathaway’s stardom, she seemed to be the kind of celebrity that people loved to hate. I KNOW, real people hating on celebrities — SHOCKER.
She crept into the Hollywood scene with "The Princess Diaries," looking a little mousy, uninformed (translation: clueless) and you know, like a normal person. The masses were not impressed.
Then Anne made her way into some more substantial roles: as Andy Sachs in "The Devil Wears Prada" and Jane Austen in "Becoming Jane." Hollywood began its dubious transformation on the seemingly innocent star (though we have to say, there was a lot of misguided boobage in Anne’s earlier days).

But the Anne we’d previously known had begun her style transformation already. Once "Rachel Getting Married" came along, the nay-sayers were forced to pause in their tracks — Hathaway was starting to show that she was so much more than poorly executed red carpet dresses and chick flicks.
But even then, haters gonna hate. As you know, our girl went on to film a wealth of movies, most notably last year’s "Les Misérables." Within a matter of years, Anne had solidified her place among Hollywood’s chic elite. From rocking that amazing pixie beyond the silver screen to her standout appearance in vintage Valentino at the Met Gala, Anne has come a long way in the name of style. (Though is it possible she recently made the worst-dressed list?)
Let’s see how Hollywood has turned Anne’s sensible style into something far more stunning:
This week, in hotel rooms all over Cannes, meticulously packed gowns are being unloaded from their trunks in preparation for the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival. Since we’re way across the Atlantic Ocean, we’re preparing by taking a look back at our absolute favorite looks to come out of the French Riviera in the past five years. Somehow we even managed to restrain ourselves from making this a solo gallery of Diane Kruger — for the most part.

The actress did merit two entries, however, one for the diaphanous turquoise Giambattista Valli gown she wore to the premiere of Moonrise Kingdom at last year's festival, and one for the Marie Antoinette-worthy Christian Dior Couture she then debuted at the closing ceremony.
Points for the theatricality also go to Fan Bingbing, who strayed from the tried-and-true Parisian ateliers and wore a gown by stylist Chris Bu Kewen inspired by traditional Chinese cultural symbols.
On the simpler side of things, Angelina Jolie had one of her best red-carpet moments to date wearing peach Versace at Cannes in 2008, while Salma Hayek and Jessica Chastain stunned in shimmering Gucci Premiere numbers.

Sometimes you just need to go nude — when it comes to your makeup, that is.
A fresh-faced Jennifer Lawrence recently sparked headlines when she attended the New York City premiere of “The Great Gatsby,” wearing barely-there makeup. She may have just been going to the movies, but she is one of many celebs who have recently embraced this laid-back look.

“The reason Jennifer Lawrence’s raw beauty look was such an aesthetic fresh breath of air was that it stands in stark contrast to the overdone celebrity looks of the day, which are almost monster-esque in their heaps of piled-on rainbow makeup,” explains Constance Dunn, author of “Practical Glamour.”
“Over the top looks camouflage the wearer,” adds Dunn. “Contrast this with the undressed look of Lawrence, whose carefully-crafted face reveals female beauty, boldly unmasked.”
While not everyone has Lawrence’s smooth skin, creating a clean look is simple with just a few products.

What trend have some celebrities been trying out in time for the steamy summer season? Bra tops.
While the concept of lingerie as outerwear isn’t a new in Hollywood, the idea of taking a crop top to the next level is fresh and tantalizing — especially for everyday women who feel like taking a style risk.

“Zoe Saldana recently killed it with this look,” says Cecelia Myers, chief styling officer at online personal shopping service site CakeStyle. While promoting her new film, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” the 34-year-old actress showed off her curves in a crisp unbuttoned white shirt, revealing a matching lacy bra. While this trend can be tricky to pull off and requires plenty of confidence, Myers believes women can still make this look chic without baring all.
“I’ve had clients ask about crop tops, and I’ve suggested a sheer blouse over a cool, pattered top,” says Myers. “You get a peekaboo effect without going too far."
Some experts also advise getting properly fitted before swiping that credit card. “Make sure you have the appropriate cup size first,” says model and fashion expert Jaimie Hilfiger. “If you are so much of a woman on top that a bra top can’t handle you, chances are this is not for you."

Finding the perfect pair of sunglasses is no day at the beach.
The right shades can make anyone look effortlessly chic, and with the sun-soaked days of summer right around the corner, it’s more important than ever to stock up.
“Sunglasses not only make you look cool, they also are very important for your health,” says Dr. Jessica Krant, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York. “A good pair of sunglasses can even save your life. The ultraviolet radiation from the sun can get in through the pupil and case damage to the retina. This can lead to an increased risk of not only macular degeneration over time, but also melanoma in the pigment cells of the retina, which can be extra deadly.”

Krant stresses that prevention from harmful rays is simple by slathering on sunscreen regularly and wearing shades that have 100% UV protective lenses. An added benefit? Protective shades can also prevent wrinkles causes by the sun's powerful rays, Krant says.
Sunglasses can do more than protect your delicate skin and eyes. With celebrities sporting the latest eyewear trends, anyone can look like a star with minimal effort.
“Sunglasses, like any statement accessory, can help transform an outfit, say a T-shirt and jeans, into something chic and fabulous,” says Lauren Michael, global product director for GUESS. “You can add a touch of old Hollywood glamour with oversized retro-inspired shapes or pops of bold, flirty colors to perk up an ensemble and make a personal style statement.”
