Boston officials say a water main gave way in the city's South End neighborhood, flooding a trench and killing two workers.

Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans confirmed the two fatalities Friday afternoon.

The workers were trapped in the 20-foot-wide trench when the water main broke Friday afternoon. Evans says the incident "looks like an accident" and police officers near the scene realized "very quickly that we had workers trapped in the hole."

Water has been shut off to the area.

Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald says the workers were with a private contractor.
