CANTON, N.C. – The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting of a man by law enforcement officers in western North Carolina near Canton.
Haywood County Sheriff's Sgt. Heidi Warren told local news outlets that officers were called to Maple Grove Baptist Church west of Canton shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Waynesville police responded with sheriff's deputies. Warren says there was an exchange of gunfire between the man and officers. She would not say how many officers fired their weapons.
No officers were hurt. The SBI wouldn't say what prompted the shooting or release the man's condition. A spokesman did not release the race of the victim or the officers involved.
Haywood County medical examiner Garry Wooten was at the scene but would not talk to reporters.
