Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and Arturo Sandoval are among the artists that will share the stage Monday night in Washington at the White House’s celebration of Latino music for Hispanic Heritage Month.
“Musica Latina: In Performance at the White House,” hosted by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, will also feature performances from Natalie Cole, Lila Downs, Raul Malo, Prince Royce, Romeo Santos, Alejandro Sanz and Marco Antonio Solis.
The concert will be recorded tonight and will be broadcast on PBS next month. A live stream of the event will start at 7 p.m.
This is not the first time the White House has celebrated Latino music. In 2009, Marc Anthony, Sheila E., Gloria Estefan, Jose Feliciano, Los Lobos, Thalia performed on the South Lawn at “Fiesta Latina,” a concert hosted by Eva Longoria, George Lopez and Jimmy Smits.
Earlier on Monday, the First Lady was scheduled to host daytime events for students, with more than 130 middle and high school students from area schools taking part in an educational workshop: “Celebrando el Ritmo Latino: The History of Latin Music.” Students will learn about the genre’s various elements and how Latino music has been popularized around the world.
Artists Lila Downs, Romeo Santos and Marco Antonio Solis will be on hand to answer questions. The workshop was set to be livestreamed at 11 a.m.
Hispanic Heritage Month officially runs Sept. 15-Oct. 15.
