Chevrolet is adding some muscle to its full-size family truck.

The Tahoe is now available with GM’s 420 hp 6.2-liter V8, which was previously reserved for SUV duty in the GMC Acadia Denali and Cadillac Escalade. The current Tahoe tops out with a 355 hp 5.3-liter V8.

It comes in a performance package offered on the sporty new Tahoe RST model, which features black trim, a body colored grille surround, and a set of eye-popping 22-inch rims. A Suburban RST is also offered with only the appearance updates.

Along with the engine, the package brings GM’s new 10-speed automatic transmission, a sport-tuned version of its Magnetic Ride Control active suspension and a free-flowing Borla exhaust system. Chevy claims the pipes boost the amount of power that makes it to the rear wheels by as much as 10 hp and help the Tahoe RST sprint to 60 mph in under six seconds.

With or without it, the RSTs can tow up to 8,400 pounds. To bring the big burdened beast down from speed, a set of monstrous 16.1-inch Brembo front brakes are optional and among the largest on any vehicle on sale today.

The Tahoe RST gives Chevy a new weapon in the fight against the all-new 2018 Ford Expedition that’s arriving later this year with an expected 400 hp from its 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6.

Pricing will be announced closer to its on sale date this fall.
