BEIRUT – Syria's state TV says government forces have retaken a neighborhood from Islamic State fighters in a northeastern city, days after it was captured by the extremists.
The IS group attacked several government-held southern neighborhoods of the city of Hassakeh last week. The fighting has continued since then, leaving dozens dead, according to activists.
Until the IS push, the predominantly Kurdish Hassakeh was split between government forces and Kurdish fighters.
State TV says troops and pro-government members of the National Defense Forces regained control of the Eastern Ghoweiran neighborhood on Tuesday.
Turkey-based opposition figure Mustafa Osso said IS captured last week three predominantly Arab neighborhoods in Hassakeh. He says fighting is still underway.
The U.N. said the IS attack that began last Thursday has displaced at least 60,000 people.
