Summary Box: UAE's BlackBerry crackdown will affect visitors too

THE CRACKDOWN: Citing security concerns, the United Arab Emirates plans to ban BlackBerry e-mail, messaging and Web services starting Oct. 11. Phone calls will still be allowed.

VISITORS, TOO: The Emirates' telecoms regulator says the ban will also apply to travelers roaming on foreign BlackBerry phones.

THOSE AFFECTED: Diplomats, oil industry personnel and any others traveling to the Mideast country. Even those just passing through Dubai's airport for a connecting flight won't have access to e-mail or Web on BlackBerry devices.
