RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi King Abdullah is calling on Egypt to back a reconciliation agreement reached between Gulf states and Qatar following months of tensions linked to last year's military overthrow of Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
The diplomatic spat was largely fueled by Qatar's support for Islamist movements across the region, including Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, and saw Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain withdraw their ambassadors from the tiny Arab nation eight months ago.
In a statement released Wednesday on the Saudi Press Agency, King Abdullah appealed to the people and leadership of Egypt to support the march toward "Arab solidarity."
The Saudi ambassador returned to Qatar on Tuesday. Details of the agreement, which also involved Kuwait, the UAE and Bahrain, have not been made public.
