SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico has launched a probe of last week's violent clash between police and demonstrators at the Capitol, the U.S. island territory's civil rights commission said Sunday.
Judge Crisanta Gonzalez will lead a commission made up of members appointed by the governor as it investigates whether anyone's civil rights were violated.
The melee broke out Wednesday when university students and other protesters tried to storm the legislature. Authorities had closed access to the general public after groups announced plans to demonstrate against budget cuts and other policies of Gov. Luis Fortuno.
Police used pepper spray and struck people with batons, while protesters threw eggs, swung barricades and grappled with officers on the Capitol steps. Police chief Jose Figueroa Sancha said protesters also vandalized several cars.
