An off-duty police constable in Jamaica was found shot to death while in his car.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force identified the dead officer as Lewis Robinson. He was a district constable assigned to the Santa Cruz police station near the central city of Mandeville.

The 56-year-old Robinson was found with multiple bullet wounds slumped in his personal car around 2 a.m. Monday after residents reported hearing gunshots.

Robinson was the third Jamaican police officer killed this year.

Police Commissioner Carl Williams described his killing as a "gruesome attack." There have been no arrests.

Jamaica recorded 1,192 slayings in 2015, a roughly 20 percent increase from the previous year.
