ABUJA, Nigeria – ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — A former governor has been selected as the head of Nigeria's ruling political party ahead of next year's presidential election.
Former Enugu state Gov. Okwesilieze Nwodo took over Thursday as the chairman of the People's Democratic Party. The party has ruled Nigeria since the West African nation emerged from a series of military dictatorships that governed the country since its independence from Britain in 1960.
Nwodo replaced former chairman Vincent Ogbulafor, who resigned after being indicted on corruption charges. Ogbulafor previously said the current president couldn't run for the presidency in next year's election.
Nwodo's selection has the president's blessing.
