Crime doesn’t pay – especially if you leave behind endless traces of yourself at the crime scene.
Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, have arrested 33-year-old Ramon Herrera, and charged him with residential burglary and larceny for allegedly breaking into a home in the northeastern Tanoan section of the city in September.
Herrera, police claim, entered the home of a family away on vacation and collected about $250,000 worth of jewelry.
Before making his getaway, however, the burglar left behind a few mementos of his stay.
For one, he urinated in a toilet and didn’t bother to flush.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, the burglar popped open a can of Coca-Cola from the fridge, drained it and left it on the kitchen table with a note propped against it reading, “Sorry.”
Police say investigators at the scene recovered a flashlight that Herrera left behind.
A few days later, the family found a sweatshirt that the thief discarded behind the wall to the property, also finding footprints that led away from their house and into an adjacent field.
The urine turned out to be a dead end, mainly because “[the detective] failed to collect any samples from the used toilet,” according to the criminal complaint filed against Herrera.
But never mind, because DNA drawn from the soft drink can did matches that of the suspect, police claim. Plus, they added, Herrera had pawned jewelry nine times since the burglary.
Herrera is being held at the Bernalillo County Jail. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
