BUCHAREST, Romania – City officials have suspended the mayor of Bucharest who is under arrest on suspicion of taking bribes worth 25,000 euros ($28,000) from companies working for the city hall.
Bucharest prefect Paul Nicolae Petrovan suspended Sorin Oprescu from his post Tuesday, a day after a court ruled he should remain in arrest.
Oprescu was arrested on Sept. 6 on bribery charges. He denies wrongdoing.
The anti-corruption prosecutors' office said the firms paid bribes to high-ranking city hall officials from their profits. About 10 percent allegedly went directly to Oprescu.
Five others have been arrested in the same case on charges of bribery and money laundering. They include Oprescu's former driver and the city hall's economic director.
The 63-year-old Oprescu has been the mayor of Bucharest since 2008.
