ISLAMABAD – A Pakistani lawyer for the main suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks says his client has been rearrested in a separate case, quashing expectations he might be freed.

Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi appeared in court Tuesday amid tight security, where a judge ordered him held for two days while police investigate.

Lakhvi is one of seven suspects being tried by Pakistan in connection with the Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people and seriously damaged relations between longtime rivals Pakistan and India.

A judge on Dec. 18 granted Lakhvi bail, citing a lack of evidence. The ruling embarrassed the government, which had vowed to crack down on militancy in the wake of a school massacre days earlier.

On Tuesday police said they were arresting Lakhvi in connection with a six-year-old abduction case.
