CULIACAN, Mexico (AFP) – Hurricane Manuel made landfall in northwestern Mexico on Thursday, hitting the country with a third major storm in less than a week, forecasters said.
Manuel made landfall west of the city of Culiacan in Sinaloa state, packing winds of 75 miles (120 kilometers) per hour and bringing the threat of flash floods and mudslides, US and Mexican weather services said.
Manuel re-emerged as a hurricane after hitting the southwest of the country on Sunday, combining with tropical storm Ingrid on the east coast to leave a trail of destruction that has killed at least 81 people.
The Sinaloa state government closed schools and ordered the evacuation of around 50 families from the fishing community of Yameto as the category one hurricane approached.
A landslide fell on a road on Sunday, hitting a car whose three passengers were rescued by local residents as their vehicle neared a precipice, officials said.
