Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating the Best of the Best

It's been a year to remember for Latinos in the United States. Now it's time to celebrate and reflect.

Latinos are growing in power and influence. Census numbers show we are the nations fast growing and largest minority population, and we are moving front and center in US political discourse, innovation, and pop culture.

In recognition of the many accomplishments made by Latinos this year, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins today, by commemorating some of the most successful Hispanics in the world today.

The Hispanic Heritage Award honorees include Mexican Entrepreneur Jorge Vergara, who owns four Mexican soccer clubs; Colombian singer Juanes, who spends his free time as a humanitarian and activist; Panamanian salsa singer and perennial presidential contender Rubén Blades, who might as well be called Mr. Panama; the Legendary El Chapulín himself Roberto Gómez Bolaños; Mexico's Soccer superstar Hugo Sánchez and Dr. Juan Andrade, a leader of leaders who is the president of the Hispanic Leader Institute.

“We are thrilled to honor yet another class of inspiring Latino leaders,” said Jose Antonio Tijerino, President and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. “The Latino community throughout history has made a positive impact in America and the world.”

Hispanic Heritage Month became official in 1988 after President Ronald Reagan signed it into law. But it had its origins in 1968 when Congress signed a proclamation declaring National Hispanic Heritage Week.
