High School Senior Fights Deportation After Store Theft

A Portland teen got more than he bargained for when he lifted a shirt – possible deportation to Mexico.

Gustavo Romero-Alvarez, who stole the shirt, told KATU he has no memory of Mexico. He was brought to the United States illegally when he was 7-years-old and is a senior at Centennial High School.

Authorities discovered his illegal immigration status after his arrest last year for the department store theft.

Romero-Alvarez spent two months in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention. He is scheduled to be deported this week.
